If you're after some nice UI effects, you could consider my NSTabView subclass which implements Core Image and Core Graphics (undocumented) transitions. It is already in use with Assignment Planner, so you may want to see if it'll fit your application.

Flashy whiz-bang widgets and animated UI effects are all the rage these days. It's almost required to have some sort of animation in order for apps to be considered cool. I think the Human Interface Guidelines should be followed as much as possible, but obviously some uniqueness should be present in the application. It's interesting, though, that Disco, being one of the flashy type apps has copped a lot of criticism for sacrificing functionality for eye candy.
